Call for Information: Are Dolphins Being Used as Sharkbait?

Posted on: April 2nd, 2013 by Hannah Darrin

dolphin1db73abA representative from the Environmental Investigation Agency is compiling information about two threats recently being posed to dolphins. The first is the use of dolphin meat in shark fisheries, and the second is the direct catch of dolphins for consumption. This practice is thought to occur in remote unstudied areas, therefore it is important to gain help from citizen scientists to report on these matters.

If you have any information on these issues, or dolphins being caught in nets, please let us know. Don’t forget to include the time and date, location, as exact as possible, the species being utilized and the number of individuals being caught. A vessel ID with the number of fishermen, as well as the type of fishing material being caught can lead to arrests, as dolphins are protected even from artisanal fisheries.
